Factors That contribute To Mental health Problem

First, we will have to define mental health. Wikipedia defines Mental health as the level of psychological well-being or an absence of mental illness. It is also the psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional, cognitive and behavioral adjustment. Mental health affects how we think, feel and act.

According to The WHO; ” mental health is a state of wellbeing in which the individual realizes his/her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life,can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his/her community ”. The WHO stresses that mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder.

FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS

There are several factors which contribute mental health problems but few would be mentioned;

  1. Biological
  2. Physical
  3. Emotional factors

Biological factors

These have to do with genetics, the brain, trauma, et cetera

GENES:- studies have shown that many mental illnesses tend to run in families. For instance, if there is a history of anxiety in a family, there is a likelihood that it would be passed on or run through the family’s generation.

Researchers think that multiple genes influence a person’s likelihood of developing a mental disorder; it means it is unlikely that we will ever find a single anxiety gene.

HEALTH PROBLEMS:– People who suffer from other serious health problems, such ad heart disease, might be at higher risk if developing depression or other mental disorders.

POOR SLEEP:- This can negatively impact mood,concentration and work or school performance. It can also make a person crave junk food and not getting proper nutrients in their diet.

Emotional Factors

SELF-ESTEEM:- The type of self-esteem we place on ourselves define our chances of a healthy life. These include the value we place on ourselves, out positive self image and sense of self worth. People with high self-esteem generally have a positive outlook and are satisfied with themselves.

CONFIDENCE:- Youth should be encouraged to discover their own unique qualities and have the confidence to face challenges and take risks. Young people who are brought up to have confidence in themselves are more likely to a have a positive attitude

LOSS OF A PARENT OR SIBLING is extremely painful. Finding ways to cope and adjust to the changes brought by this critical for everyone particularly for the youth.

Therefore, mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood through adolescence to adulthood.
